Rakon releases the radiation tolerant COTS XO RK105 and VCXO RK205

Written by Rakon | 16 September 2018

In order to respond to the growing needs of the New Space market (Low Earth Orbit satellites with a short mission lifetime), Rakon has recently released a radiation tolerant XO and a radiation tolerant VCXO, both based on a COTS (Commercially Off The Shelf) design.

They have been designed for missions requiring radiation tolerance at a reasonable cost and with a short lead-time: TID (Total Ionizing Dose) spec is 72 or 100 kRad (for CMOS) and Single Event Latch-up is guaranteed up to 32.4 or 62 MeV (for LVPECL).

Key features of these radiation tolerant COTS XO and VCXO also include:

  • Wide frequency ranges with three output options available:
    • CMOS output – Frequencies from 8 to 200 MHz
    •  LVPECL/LVDS output – Frequencies from 8 to 1500 MHz
  • Tight FvT stability:
    • AFD (Absolute Frequency Drift): ±50 ppm over -40 to +85°C
    • APR (Absolute Pulling Range): ±50 ppm for a VCXO
  • Small hermetically sealed SMD package size of 5.0 x 3.2 x 1.2 mm
  • Excellent high shock resistance: up to 1500 g, 0.5 ms, 1/2 sine
  • Low RMS jitter: 0.9 ps typ.
  • Low power: 50 to 178 mW typ.

Both products are available with different types of screening: from EM (Engineering Model) to FM (Flight Models), with 3 possible screening options for the FM in order to precisely fit the various requirements of the New Space projects. The COTS design of these both products make them cost-effective and ideal for the small LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellites requiring radiation tolerant components at a reasonable cost.
