The synchronisation between the radios and the DU (Distributed Unit) is of utmost importance for the basic functionality of 5G networks and advanced features like carrier aggregation.
5G provides various options to split the baseband processing functionality, primarily into DUs and CUs (Centralised Units). DUs deploy a variety of synchronisation sources and must be supported by a highly accurate synchronisation reference clock. Typical deployments need to provide 4–24 hours of holdover capability to mitigate the risks of a synchronisation failure.
